In continued direct support of the Government of Jamaica’s response to the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Melissa, PDC is providing ongoing updates on impacts and the status of critical infrastructure. PDC is also providing onsite assistance to the Government of The Bahamas, as Melissa has passed through the central and southeastern islands and assessments are underway.
The attached screenshot—depicting Black River, Jamaica where Melissa made landfall as a historic Category 5 hurricane—demonstrates the types of decision-support information available through DisasterAWARE Pro aiding response and recovery operations. This example includes data on hazard impacts (e.g. floodwater depths) and the status of key infrastructure such as airports, ports, hospitals, bridges, water facilities, shelter occupancy, and power.

Now at Category 2 strength, Hurricane Melissa has moved offshore of eastern Cuba and is expected to impact parts of the southeastern and central Bahamas today with life-threatening storm surge, heavy rain, and hurricane conditions.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are anticipated to be impacted today by tropical storm conditions, heavy rain, and significant storm surge.
Catastrophic flash flooding and landslides are also expected to continue impacting parts of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) today. Haiti is likely to experience extensive damage, leaving communities isolated.
Further along Melissa’s track, Bermuda may be impacted starting late tomorrow through tomorrow night with hurricane conditions and heavy rain.

The center of Hurricane Melissa, now at Category 4 strength, is moving off the northern coast of western Jamaica. Damaging winds are expected to continue to impact parts of the island this evening, while landslides and catastrophic flooding is expected to persist through the night. Widespread damage to infrastructure is anticipated, including power and communication outages, leaving many communities isolated.
Damaging winds and life-threatening storm surge are expected to begin impacting eastern Cuba soon, along with heavy rains, flash flooding, and landslides.
Hurricane conditions are expected to begin impacting parts of the southeastern and central Bahamas tomorrow, including life-threatening storm surge and heavy rains. Turks and Caicos may be impacted by Tropical Storm conditions, significant storm surge, and heavy rainfall tomorrow as well.
Catastrophic flash flooding and landslides are expected to continue across southwestern Haiti and southern parts of the Dominican Republic over the next day or so.
